Goodbye Old Man
[Verse 1]
The mornin’s heavy, skies are worn-out gray,
Your shadow lingers, though you slipped away.
I was five years old when you walked on by,
Just a little boy with a thousand whys.
Now you’re gone again, the story’s last line,
But the ache you left… still feels like mine.
[Pre-Chorus]
It ain’t the years, it’s the love we never found,
All those quiet days when you weren’t around.
A heart full of echoes, no one could hear,
Still reachin’ for a man who was never near.
[Chorus]
Goodbye, old man… with tears I can’t explain,
It ain’t just your leavin’, it’s the years of pain.
All the dreams we missed, all the words unsaid,
Maybe in heaven, we’ll talk instead.
Yeah, goodbye, old man… my heart’s still sore,
Carryin’ the weight of a love we never wore.
All the time we lost, and the ghosts we share,
Maybe in heaven… we’ll fix it there.
[Verse 2]
I ain’t cryin’ for the things you never gave,
But for the life we never learned to save.
Seein’ your face in my own from time to time,
A stranger’s eyes in a mirror line.
What were your dreams? Did you feel the same?
Did you ever whisper your only son’s name?
[Pre-Chorus]
It ain’t the hurt, it’s the chances gone to waste,
That long-lost hope of a father’s face.
A heart full of questions, a wound that stays,
Still searchin’ for a love that never came.
[Chorus]
Goodbye, old man… with tears I can’t explain,
It ain’t just your leavin’, it’s the years of pain.
All the dreams we missed, all the words unsaid,
Maybe in heaven, we’ll talk instead.
Yeah, goodbye, old man… my soul feels bare,
Haunted by love that was never there.
All the time we lost, and the ghosts we share,
Maybe in heaven… we’ll fix it there.
[Bridge]
Ain’t no anger left, just a quiet ache,
Wonderin’ who you were behind that break.
Did you laugh at night? Did you cry alone?
Ever wish you’d picked up the phone?
I’ll hold the pieces of a life untold,
Of a father’s love that never took hold.
[Chorus]
Goodbye, old man… with tears I can’t explain,
It ain’t just your leavin’, it’s the old refrain.
All the dreams we missed, all the words unsaid,
Maybe in heaven, we’ll talk instead.
Yeah, goodbye, old man… my soul feels bare,
Chasin’ a love that was never there.
All the time we lost, and the ghosts we share,
Maybe in heaven… we’ll fix it there.
[Outro]
Oh, maybe in heaven… we’ll fix it there.
I’ll find you, old man… in the still night air.
Goodbye… yeah, goodbye…
We’ll fix it there…

Goodbye Old Man
“I wrote Goodbye Old Man as a way of closing a chapter that never really opened in the first place. My father left when I was young, and most of what I feel isn’t about losing something we shared — it’s about grieving the relationship we never got to build. There’s a specific kind of ache that comes from missing someone who was never truly there, from carrying questions that never found answers, and from learning who you are without ever seeing the reflection of where you came from.
While I was writing this, what surfaced wasn’t anger — it was that quiet, lifelong sadness of wondering who he was, what he dreamed about, whether he ever thought of me, and why the distance between us stayed so wide for so long. You spend years imagining a conversation that never happens, hoping someday the gap might close, even just a little.
The song became my way of saying goodbye to the hope I held onto for most of my life — the hope that one day we’d talk, one day we’d understand each other, one day we’d fix what was broken before I was old enough to understand it.
Goodbye Old Man isn’t about letting go of a father I knew.
It’s about letting go of the father I wished I’d had.
And sometimes that goodbye hurts the most.”
